I'm a writer because of Dear America and the American Girl books. Which is funny since I don't write historical fiction. But I started writing because of these books. They're not all winners, but some, like this one, prove that just because it's for a younger audience doesn't mean history has to be cleaned up. Anetka is brought to America by her father to marry his old man friend. And when she's left a widow at 12 she's responsible for his three young daughters. Pretty intense for children's literature...
